Kent Messenger - February 20th 2004: Don’t take short cuts with mower security

Police are urging people to take extra care to secure their garden sheds.

The advice from Maidstone and Malling Police follows an incident in Heath Road, West Farleigh, last week when offenders broke into an outbuilding and tried to steal a ride-on mower.
Police security tips are:

  • Never leave your shed or garage unlocked. Fit good quality locks and consider installing an alarm.
  • Never leave garden equipment lying in the garden overnight. Put it away somewhere secure.
  • Consider chaining larger items such as lawnmowers, strimmers and power tools, together and to a solid anchorage point.
Property mark all valuables with your house number and postcode in UV pen or with an etching tool and make sure you record all serial numbers, makes and models.
